The promise of living
With hope and thanksgiving
Is born of our loving
Our friends and our labour
Gabriola Chamber Ensemble (GCE), under the direction of Leah Hokanson, is pleased to present ‘The Promise of Living’ Sunday, Nov. 4, 3 pm and 7:30 pm, at the Gabriola United Church.
The concert will feature works that speak about the human condition, about friendship, love, the importance of community, and what might be waiting for us once we pass on.
Hokanson has chosen a variety of beautiful pieces from different musical genres – both classical and contemporary – with works by Samuel Barber (1910-1981), Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), Maurice Durufle (1902-1986), Jules Massenet (1842-1912) (arranged by our own Steve Smith), and Franz Schubert (1797-1828).
One of the most moving pieces is entitled The Promise of Living from the modern opera The Tender Land by Aaron Copland (1900-1990) and arranged by GCE’s beloved founder and former director, John Capon.
We are also pleased to feature island soprano extraordinaire, Elizabeth Lutz, as guest vocalist, singing, with the choir in accompaniment, The Road Home by Stephen Paulus (1949-present).
The concerts will be dedicated in loving memory of our dear friend, and Gabriola chamber’s beloved bass player, Ken Capon. Thank you, Ken, for showing us all the promise of living.
Advance tickets are $15; door $18; and children 10 years and under get in free with an adult. Tickets are available at Artworks and Robert’s Place.
