Constable Mari Haslam is “working with Gabriola Rescue of Wildlife Society (GROWLS) and the local veterinarian” to investigate a number of suspicious animal deaths.
Gabriola RCMP Corporal Trevor MacKay reported last week that GROWLS has “received two separate reports of animals being found dead in the area of Dirksen Road and Fell Road”.
These reports, he said, were preceded by the recent “suspicious death of three racoons and a heron which was shot approximately four weeks ago”. He said the heron was taken to the Wildlife Recovery Centre in Errington where it died.
“Police are awaiting results of how the racoons died before asking for the public assistance with information,” MacKay said.
