The Gabriola Arts Council (GAC) has established an annual ‘Ken Capon Community Spirit Award’ in honour of Gabriolan Ken Capon.
In their October newsletter, GAC said: “The Gabriola Arts Council couldn’t have asked for a better friend than Ken, who was always there with an open mind, a helping hand and a generous heart”. They added that they have also commissioned a piece of art “created by his dear friend, carver Rick Cranston”.
“The Ken Capon Community Spirit Award will be given annually at Thanksgiving to an islander who embodies Ken’s commitment to community,” the council wrote. “We’ll create a selection committee comprised of representatives from GAC, other community organisations, and Ken’s family.”
GAC added that they planned to kick off the fundraising for the award at an Oct. 20 Gabriola Bandstand event at the Surf Lodge which they said was “organised by Ken and (life-partner) Cherryl (Reed’s) close friend Lindsay Stocking Godfrey.
