Spraying to control road dust on Gabriola was completed as of the end of the long weekend in May according to Rob Heslip, supervisor for EMCON services – the company that maintains the roads on Gabriola.
Asked, at a June 18 Gabriola Transportation Association (GTA) meeting at Agi Hall between Gabriolans and transportation officials, if there would be further spraying in the summer, Heslip said as a rule the spray is only applied one time per year. He acknowledged it has been a “really wet spring” so it is hard to say how well it will stand up.
GTA member Randy Young said that some observers thought that the quality of the surface of the gravel roads improved after the dust control was spayed. He wondered if anyone had done any research on the impact of the spray on road quality. Heslip said the roads had been graded just prior to spraying. Young said the improvement was probably due to a combination of the grading and the dust spraying.
