Science vs. environmental summits and other fables
Monday, June 25, 2012

Some ironies beggar description. Such was the case in The Shingle inbox this week, when an article with the succinct headline “We’re done” was followed two days later by a Vancouver Sun story  explaining that Christy Clark has declared that natural gas is ‘green energy’ as long as it’s used to produce Liquid Natural Gas.

The first article (http://guymcpherson.com/2012/06/were-done) lived up to its title by explaining that “business as usual” will take us past tipping points at which the release of methane into the atmosphere “… will accelerate exponentially, release huge quantities of methane into the atmosphere and lead to the demise of all life on earth before the middle of this century”.

That’s 38 years from now by the way, for those who don’t like to do the math.

And that was just one of the terrifying points made in an article that appeared to do a pretty good job of quoting good sources.

Follow that with Christy ‘Canute’ Clark’s apparent belief that the laws of physics – i.e. the impact of burning fossil fuels on global warming – are made mutable by Premier’s decree. And mix into that the abject failure of this week’s environmental summit in Rio to do anything real about the catastrophic events we face if we don’t reverse direction yesterday. …

Well, it’s been a pretty depressing week for those who love this planet. Or children. Or life as we know it in this galaxy.
