Dear Gord # 50

Mr. Premier, I need your help, and I don’t know who else to turn to for this assistance. I’m faced with this conundrum: I can’t figure out for the life of me how the hell you got re-elected and why the entire electorate is not surrounding the Legislative Assembly and demanding the resignation of you and your Liberal colleagues.

I mean, take a look at your record and the moves you’ve made in the past few weeks, months and years. You said you’d never sell BC Rail, and you did. You made BC Ferries (BCF) a semi-private, publicly-funded corporation and proclaimed your government would never interfere with it like the nasty socialists had done, but then you blatantly interfered a few years ago by reducing rates and reinstating cancelled runs, and now your government is pretending to be shocked and upset because the CEO is sucking in a million bucks a year in salary. So, with righteous indignation, you’ve introduced legislation to control BCF salaries and open their books up to public scrutiny. So much for your “private corporation” theory!

A few years ago, you proclaimed with almost fanatical righteousness that you’d never allow an increase in gambling in BC, but now that you’ve fallen a tad short in the money management department, you proudly announce the creation of a new gambling casino beside the soon to be newly roofed (to the tune of $563 million) BC Place.

I’m thinking consistency isn’t one of your strong points Mr. Premier.

Not only that, you are now taking the lion’s share of all the proceeds from gaming in this province to help pay down your fiscal fiasco, leaving kids, arts groups, non-profit organizations and others without the means to carry on the work they do to support our communities. Nice touch!

Then there’s the collectively despised HST that you’ve rammed thought the Legislature and imposed with closure. Even the staunchest supporters of your regime must be able to see how obvious your tactics are in this matter. I did notice however, that you weren’t in the Legislature to cast a vote on this matter. Guess you didn’t want your good name attached to this piece of public manipulation.

Almost the same day, like a smoke bomb, your government introduced a brand new law that would make BC the toughest province in Canada when dealing with drivers who have been drinking. Too bad it wasn’t in place in Hawaii a few years ago!

What I have noticed is that the fines - which are not really fines but rather “administrative penalties”- are given outside the judicial system with little recourse for appeal and done behind closed doors. I get really nervous when decisions are made behind closed doors and outside the judicial system.

Your government continues to erode the powers of the Child Advocate by not allowing her to have access to documentation in the Ministry of Children and Family Development, thus limiting her ability to do the work she was hired to do. Nice touch with BC still leading the country in child poverty. So much for transparent government, eh?

You know Mr. Premier, you and your government were elected to provide leadership for the citizens of BC, not to act as if you are the autocrats we are allowed to vote for once every four years. The people of BC, from all accounts, are opposed to the HST yet you rammed it through with absolute disregard for rising public opinion.

You are employed by the people of BC and have an inherent obligation to confer with us to ensure that your government is listening to us. You have not listened to us regarding BC Ferries. You did not listen to us when you sold BC Rail. You did not listen to us when you disregarded the issues of poverty and child poverty. You did not listen to us when we demanded that you raise the minimum wage in this province. You did not listen to us when you increased the MSP again and again. You did not listen to us when you closed thousands of long term care beds. You have not listened to us when schools have been closed all over this province.

You have answered questions with statistics, not with heart or compassion. You and your ministers act with astonishing arrogance and with little regard for the voters of BC. Mr. Premier, this version of democracy is not working for most of us. We almost had some version of proportional representation a few years ago, but your government placed the bar so high that it was almost impossible to achieve what might have been an exciting and enlightened experiment in real democracy. I’m guessing you just weren’t interested. Maybe it’s time for you to take heed and just kash out!
